I recently found a site that allows you to start your own networking group online. Whether you are involved with a group, such as a charity, or you want to establish yourself as an expert in your field, ning.com is a great tool.
Easy and quick to set-up, you can display pictures and videos, blog, create special interest groups and generate discussion with those in your network. Networks can be public or private and the service is free.
There is a business option and for a small fee, you can use your own domain name and remove any of ning’s advertising and replace it with your own.
Update: At the time of writing this post, Ning was totally free. In 2011, they began to charge a small monthly fee for their basic service. In spite of this, I still think that Ning is a great way to have your own membership site without having to deal with all of the technical headaches and steep learning curve that are often experienced with other programs. Following is a video I found that explains a lot of the features.
