My mother suggested a "Comptometer Course". They were electric machines with rows of buttons from 0-9 that were used to calculate invoices and add up manual books before electronic calculators were invented. That job took me from Australia to England - I even worked in the Accounts Department of Harrods! Whilst in London, I learnt to be a COBOL computer programmer - I punched my first programs onto cards which then got transferred to tapes. I ended up marrying a New Zealand dentist when we were in England and moving to New Zealand. I then began doing the book-keeping for my husband's practice - all manual until we got a PC and I began to learn software to do the books and payroll. What big changes there have been!
